Hand tinting Questions
History and Development
  1. When did people start hand tinting photographs?
People started hand tinting photos in the 19th century.
Selecting a Print
  1. What tones should you look for when choosing a suitable print for hand tinting? Why?
Choose a print that has a good range of tones, you do not want a print that has a lot of solid black areas because the color will not show.
  1. Can hand tinting improve the quality of the original print? Why or Why not?
No it cannot improve quality in the print because you’re only adding color, not sharpness or any other quality.
  1. What type of image should be used? Why?
A picture that is meaningful to you, no matter if portrait, landscape, cityscape or more because the process of hand tinting is very laborious and motivation is needed to finish it.
Choosing the Right Paper
  1. What kind of photo paper should and should not be used for hand tinting? Why or why not?
Fiber-based paper is not coated which makes the hand tinting process easier. The resin coated is water resistant and has a plastic coat making it harder to tint. Also glossy is hard to put the color on so semi- matte is better.
  1. Why would it be beneficial to tone the print before hand tinting?
Toning helps warm the paper so it is not a straight forward black and white image, it has other grey values.
Setting Up a Work Station
  1. Why is it necessary to have a clean workspace?
It’s necessary so your paint does not mix or add an unwanted color onto your print, the paints in general can be very messy.
  1. What can you do to keep it clean?
Tape down papers, apply a masking tape border onto the print, and tape your paint to an old resin coated paper.
Techniques
  1. What type of coloring effect works best? Superficial or Naturalistic? Explain.
Naturalistic effect works best because of its range of known colors to the eye and it is recognizable
  1. What are warm colors and where should they be applied on the print? Why?
Warm colors are reds, oranges, and yellows. They can be applied in the print for a fire or a sunset sky. That would be the realistic use for the colors and are familiar to the eye
  1. What are cool colors and where should they be applied on the print? Why?
Cool colors are blue, green, and purples. They should be applied to any dark toned items, waters, or grounds. Cool colors add a part in the mood too making it gloomy unlike warm colors. Use it for mood or realistic colors.
  1. What types of colors should be applied in shadow areas?
Complementary colors of the object that is being shadowing.
  1. Why should mixing black and white be avoided?
The values are already presented in the original print.
  1. What should be done to achieve darker colors? Lighter colors?
You build up the color to make it darker and to make it lighter you only use a small quantity.
Materials: Marshall’s Photo Oils
  1. Will the oils cover up the original tones of the print? Yes or No?
No, it is still shown.
  1. How is color built up on the print?
By adding several layers of the paint.
  1. How much paint should be used on the mixing palette?
Very small quantities
  1. Why should paints be mixed and not used straight from the tube?
It will make them appear more realistic.
  1. Which areas of the print should be tinted first?
The dark areas
  1. What material should you use to pick up the color and apply it to the print?
Q-Tips
  1. What material should be used to smooth out the color?
    Clean cotton ball
  2. Should you tint the lightest values or darkest values first? Explain.
Dark values, so you can get used to hand tinting before going over light areas that are very noticeable.
  1. What is the name of the solution used to wipe out a color?
Extender
  1. What material can you use to get the smaller details?
A tooth pick
  1. How long does it take the oils to dry?
About 24 hours
  1. In what circumstance would you want to wait for the oils to dry before applying again?
If you don’t want the colors to blend
  1. Why should P.M. Solution be avoided?
It contains hazardous ingredients and should be used in caution.

WHAT I WANT TO SHOW:

I would like to convey the importance of women inside of an abusive relationship. I would like to show how the women reacted from an era in which this abuse is the normality such as the 1950’s and from a modern day time which shows how the reaction of today. These reactions will be different, while signaling that times have changed, but men haven’t. Abuse still happens. Let that be known throughout generations until it is stopped. Abuse was treated as a simple punishment, it was normal. The girl in my photos will be smiling to show the normality of it all. If a woman did something wrong, punish them, despite the fact you’re their husband, you’re a man shouldn’t you be in control? These men were taught in a world where they must be manly; they must stand up for their gender. Because of this nature of teaching men how to act with a woman by their side, men continue to treat women that way. Times have changed, women have changed, the reflection of abuse has changed, but men haven’t changed. I want to show the oppression women deal with while with men, and women. For my next roll I am showing the oppression of women within their own gender. Society puts a rank onto women based on how they look instead of who they are. A permanent stereotype is latched onto your life and is carried with you all throughout your life. Everyone’s race has this, even if they are not as bad as others. The way the society ranks person is always under the white race, as if they are superior. Comparing the stereotypes is never equal, saying white girls always likes pumpkin spice and starbucks is not equal to saying all Asians have funny eyes, eat rice every meal, and are bad drivers. Society will rank races and then those stereotypes are categorized with those people. I want to show how unhappy the girls are when they are unequal, but when in an equally placed line they are happy. They will be representing how society is and how it should be. We have lived in a world where oppressing women is normal, but change is coming. People are recognizing this and trying to bring change.

In these pictures it shows a male dominance. In the first picture the male looks as if he is claiming his territory, and the second looks as if he is making sure she is saying nothing wrong, or breaks his rules. The first picture is shot at a straight forward angle, it has lots of dark values, which helps to the dark meaning that is being shown in this picture. The second picture is angled towards the right. Both pictures the subject is about an arms length away. The pictures are being framed with the objects in their home; in the first it is also being framed by the dark shadows over throwing the subject, in the second there is a lot of white values behind the subject. They both have a shallow depth of field, but the second has a shallower one, it focuses only on the people the most, not letting any focus go to anything else. The first one you can see other parts of the room, which I think is important because it shows they are not living richly.
One of the most important things that stand out in the first one is the man’s wedding ring, it is surrounded by dark values, but the metal is shining and reflecting light, it has a very strong shape and line. The woman’s legs in the first picture give a good source of lines and shape. Half of her legs are being hit by shadows, while the other half is close to the window and the dark and lights combine. There is lots of space around the people because the couple is in the middle. The man has texture in his arm from t he hair, and the bed has texture from the fabric. The second photograph doesn’t have much space around the couple, but on the right side of the woman, there is a lot of white space around her. The first picture shows a united couple as he is pulling her into his arm. The second picture shows the couple separated as she is talking and he is glaring at her. I think these pictures show the role in relationships and how men expect to be a dominant character. The women are overlooked as a less important character in the roles of a relationship. You can see the bruises on both wives so it is showing that violence is presence in the marriage, which introduces an issue.

Contact Sheet 1.jpg
What did you do? Why? What did you learn? How?
I mostly took pictures expecting myself to sandwich most objects. I took pictures of an object then took pictures of similar objects that could be added on to the main image. The couch picture is what I thought would turn out the best but after seeing my contact sheet I thought of new ideas. My multiply exposures didn’t turn out as planned so I mostly focused on sandwiching thinking within my themes. My themes were telling the differences between nature and humans and civilization and how humans choose if they are on the side of nature or the side of civilization. With humans comes destruction of nature, and with nature brings harmony of the world. I learned that multiple exposures are hard to do with my camera and it takes lots of practice to know the right amount to move it. I took lots of photos and the multiple exposers never lined up right, but it still came out with a cool effect.

Contact Sheet 2.jpg
What did you do? Why? What did you learn? How?

After my first roll of film I noticed what I can do for my project and decided to take more photos of human structure and buildings. I wanted more photos of bricks and buildings so I could combine them with the picture of a girl laying down to show her choice on the sides of human versus nature. It could be a series of choices between the two themes; humans and nature. I learned again that multiply exposure takes more than 4 turns all the way around line up correctly, even though I still got a good picture out of the roll. It was almost halfway which made the pictures closer and better.

imgrund-2.jpg

This piece of art made by Florian Imgrund is a photo made by double exposure. The hands are the dominant shape in this photo and the trees inside the hands are the least exposed item. The hands when looking at a close detail you can see the finger nails and wrinkles in the hands almost as if the trees are the skin on the hands. The skin is somewhat visible especially on the hand on the right. The hands are placed right in the center of the photograph and are obviously the main object your eyes are supposed to notice. When you take a deeper look you see the trees, the trees are more noticeable in the fingers where it is the tree tops and light is coming in when you get close to the palm of the hand the trees are less noticeable but are still there. The shape in very distinguished from the hands, it has a high value contrast. The hands are very dark and the background is white. It emphasizes the hands and what is inside of them. The distance from the camera and the object is not far, the object is very close to the camera. The angle is more to the left looking at the back of the left hand. The trees have a larger depth of field because it is not just one tree, but many you almost see a whole forest. The hands frame the trees into a dark, straight shape.
You can tell this took some work and time to get the correct photograph you want. You need to decide which photo goes first, which photo is going to be the main subject, and how everything will be placed and shot. It wasn’t just something you can decide right away it takes time. Between the hands you have lots of space, including the background and in between the fingers you can see the white background coming through. The trees inside of the hands create a very dark value, on the hand on the right I can almost see some skin or what seems to be. The skin on the wrist has lots of texture, it almost looks like mud. On the thumb you can see more texture of the hand itself because it is overlapping with the other hand. The trees create a pattern inside the hands of almost stripes. The hands and trees together a unity in the shapes, the trees ties together the shape of the hand is very distinct too.
I think this picture represents the human shape of nature. Humans shape nature and either help it grow or die. The hands represent the power we have over nature; the trees represent the life of nature and how much it helps us too. The trees form the insides of the hands, just like in the real world, nature helps us live. I think the tone is very eco-friendly but also meaningful to show our power and what it can do.
When I first see this picture I note the hands, I only notice the trees after looking at the detail. I see the human side of things first. I think every person can see a different side first, and that shows which is more important to you: human life or nature

Jerry Uelsmann Nature and the human form.jpg

When I see this picture I notice the detail of the brick road, the bark on the tree, the detail of the twigs and other objects that make up the nest, and the contrast between the pale skin and the dark objects and black background. This picture has a small depth of field; there is no background, but blackness. The black background frames more than half the picture, while the brick road frames the bottom half. The angle is mostly straight forward but when you look at the hands you notice that they are slightly turned which makes you notice the angle is slightly turned to the right, making an angle for the hands holding the nest. This picture has a lot of lines and details to help your eye move around. My eye starts at the tips of the fingers and moves around the nest and descends down to the tree trunk and to the bricks. There is not much of a distance, you’re not very close but you’re not far at all, the photographer is probably a few feet away. The picture is an outside object but singular, the crow on the right is the only other object that is not attached.

The black background gives lots of space with the tree and creates an emphasis on the hands. The hands have a very distinctive form that pops along with the background. There is lots of great value in this picture because of the background again. The hands have a very pale skin tone and they are against a harsh, dark background. There is lots of texture in this photo. The brick road creates a path for your eyes to walk in and around the photo. The bark on the tree goes in a rising pattern moving your eyes up to the hands, which are the real focus. The hands are smooth, but the picture is sharp so you can see the little wrinkles on the thumb and palm. The nest has the very sharp twigs that move your eye in the shape of the nest, around and around in a circle. The egg had a very bold contrast, inside the nest is very dark and the egg is this pearly white color that is all smooth. Some of the patterns are repetitive, especially the bricks, which is throughout the ground. The hands and egg have the biggest emphasis because they also have the biggest contrast.

The hands and egg with the largest contrast help me think that they are the most important. I think it shows how important nature is because multiply things are symbolizing nature: crow, tree, dirt, bricks, nest, and egg. The hands are the biggest object in the picture also showing that they are very important. I think it shows that humans have the biggest impact of nature, we either help it grow and create new life or we let it die. It shows how important our existence is and how we help the existence of the earth. The earth helps other things grow and live including animals and humans. Without the earth we wouldn’t be alive and the stress on that topic is very important.

I think the picture has an emotional feeling that comes along with it showing how important treatment of nature is. Showing the impacts of humans to nature, as it goes both ways. We can help the earth grow, because it already helps us. Don’t you want to survive? The earth has to survive to help you live.

Artist intentions: I used dark room, scanner, and Photoshop to add and make my objects more bold and to stand out with the meaning of boldness, beauty, and being your own individual. I learned how to take pictures from the internet, in my case flowers, and take out the background to add into my picture. I also learned how to change the color of an object by using saturation, along with that i found out how to take the inverse of something and add it into my progress.

Description: When I first look at this notice the fabric in the background on the photogram and the other objects framing the quote to show it's important. The red and blue colors stand out and make another frame around the picture itself. There is a lot of contrast because of the inverse piece. I like that I added the inverse to show how it can be seen in two different ways.

When I look at this I see originality and being yourself but loud in character to show you are an individual. Someone can be beautiful and strong and they as a person can be viewed different ways.
